Wines So Good...They Can Change The World!
Humanitas is a unique winery with a very compelling story. Simply we make wine, sell it, and give the profits to charity!
Specifically, the profits go to find solutions to three very primary issues -- hunger, affordable housing and health -- and we've chosen Feeding America (an umbrella for local Food Banks) and Habitat for Humanity, and the Edith Sanford Breast Cancer Foundation, however, we try to support whatever charity best addresses these issues community by community.
You see, at Humanitas, we don't give the funds to the national headquarters of these charities. Rather, we give to the regional chapters in the communities where the wine was sold. In this way, by enjoying Humanitas, you are giving back to your own community!
But Humanitas is first and foremost about the wines. We are wine people -- pure & simple. Our goal is to make outstanding wines and sell them affordably. And we also want to 'do something good' for the world. We married these two passions and Humanitas was born.
Humanitas is really delightful wine passionately crafted by a band of folks having a great time doing a good thing. We hope to change the world...one sip at a time!
Please join us, and please tell your friends, family & co-workers who love good wine and might embrace our vision. It is so easy...simply go to the 'Wine Store' section of the site, place and order, and enjoy a wonderful bottle of wine knowing that your purchase is also helping those less fortunate. What a painless and, well, enjoyable way to contribute! Charity never tasted so good!!
And remember to ask your favorite wine shops and restaurants to carry Humanitas. If we run out, we'll make some more!
Sometime in 1997, after more than 20 years in the wine business, founder & owner Judd Wallenbrock was working for another winery and dreaming of starting his own (a life long goal). But he knew that the industry offers a virtual sea of wine choices to consumers and unless he had a truly compelling point of difference, he just couldn't justify further muddying the waters.
Parallel to this, on a more personal note, he was thinking that he really wanted to do more to help those less fortunate. He really wanted to 'do something good' as corny as it sounds. The problem is, volunteering time and money isn't all that easy sometimes.
One day the light bulb clicked on, and inspired by companies such as Paul Newman's Own, the two dreams were connected and a vision was born to make wines 'so good' they could change the world - both in the quality of the wine & the quality of life the sale of the wines could create for those less fortunate.
In late summer 2002, Humanitas sent out an e-mail offer to roughly 200 people. The title of the e-mail was the "Humanitas IPO -- Initial Pinot Offering" (we decided we could afford poking fun at some of the paradigms of 'normal' business). The letter asked the question "Wouldn't it be great if every time you enjoyed a glass of wine you were doing something to better your community?" We told the recipients our story, asked them to buy wine, and encouraged them to forward the message on to others they thought might be interested.
Within hours we had orders flooding in from people to whom we didn't send the e-mail!!
People not only embraced our concept, but clearly, a chord was struck and they 'paid it forward' by sharing the offer with others. Then the re-orders came and we knew poeple liked the wine!
Today, Humanitas is a reality and you are invited to be a part of it.
The origins of the name 'Humanitas' stem back to a trip to Florence, Italy. On one of the many famous carved doors in the city, there is a carving of two monks handing out food. Above the picture is the word 'Charitas'. The word resonated with us, not only for its message, but for the use of Latin, a language that seems to speak to the world without association to any one country.
'Humanitas' is the Latin word for 'philanthropy', 'human nature', and 'character' and embraces all that is the company -- making great wines of character and donating the profits to philanthropic causes.
That the profits of Humanitas will be donated to charity is a very compelling reason to embrace our wine, and for that matter, encourage others to do the same. But we hope you return to buy Humanitas often because the wines are so darned good!
Enjoy Humanitas...Drink Charitably!
